Legal English Pre-LLM Program

Program Overview - LEPP

The Legal English Pre-LLM Program (LEPP) is intended not only for those who are in the process of applying for LLM programs in the U.S., but also for professionals who want to enhance their knowledge of legal English. The courses focus on strengthening your confidence to read and write in legal English, as well as sharpening your abilities to orally discuss legal issues. All of our courses use materials that are law-specific, including samples of judicial opinions and articles from legal journals and newsletters.

Throughout the program, you’ll also have access to learning opportunities with U.S. lawyers, as well as opportunities to observe the U.S. legal system firsthand in the capital of the U.S., Washington, D.C.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a Certificate of Completion.

Fall or Spring Semester Coursework (late August–December or January–early May)

Some applicants may benefit from additional English language development before beginning the LEPP program. These students are encouraged to apply for admissions to the Intensive English Program in the English Language Center at the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies for a one-semester (16-week) academic English learning opportunity.

The goal of the curriculum of the Intensive English Program at Georgetown University is to provide effectively organized, high-quality English-language instruction that meets the personal, academic, and professional needs of learners whose native language is not English.

The curriculum is based on an integrative, communicative approach to language learning and teaching. This integrative approach incorporates the development of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) with linguistic knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. This approach also incorporates effective use of information and communication technology to enhance the language-learning process and to provide instruction that will prepare students for their future communication needs in communication.
